Triggering a Zap from existing items in an RSS feed

It's easy to trigger a Zap from new items in an RSS feed using the RSS by Zapier app, but did you know that it's also pretty simple to trigger a Zap from existing items?This workaround uses a really useful function in Google Sheets called IMPORTFEED, which will import existing items from an RSS feed into your Google Sheet. Here's how you can use it trigger a Zap:Import get the RSS feed link. In this case, I grabbed the one for Zapier's blog: Open a fresh sheet in Google Sheets and in the first cell type =IMPORTFEED("url-of-RSSfeed")Look at the information in from the feed to figure out what column headers you'll need for your Zap. In a new sheet, add the headers. Set up your Zap using the Google Sheets New Row in Spreadsheet trigger, make sure that it's triggering from your new sheet with the header row. Add whatever action you'd like (eg sending the information to a social media scheduling app).Go to your sheet with the RSS feed, make sure

Things NOT to do on Google Sheets that are involved in live zaps

Google Sheets is an AWESOME app, that I use loads. However those of you who use it a lot may have experienced your zaps breaking after someone (maybe a team member or customer) edits the sheet in certain ways.Here is what I do when I set up Google Sheets for customers:I always create a Worksheet at the very beginning titled "Instructions":This is the standard text I use:This may seem a bit draconian, but unfortunately I have run into issues with these with so many different permutations that it's difficult to narrow them down. One of the permutations, for example, related to whether the connected Google account was a standard account or part of G Suite. The devs in charge of the G Sheets zap are clearly trying to limit these issues. I have noticed a shift lately from "named" sheets to ID'd sheets, which I'm sure is part of the process. Weird hack (or bug?!) that allows you to post a new GSheet row at the top instead of the bottom

So, I discovered this one by accident and I'm guessing this is a bug, either with Google Sheet's API or Zapier's integration, but I found a way to post a new row at the top of a Google Sheet instead of the bottom.Say you want a sheet with 4 columns - what you need to do is set up a Google Sheet with 6 columns. Important - the 1st column needs to be left completely blank - no header or anything data at all in that column.For the other columns you intend to use, the header row should be left blank.The final column you don't intend to use should have a header - this is so the other columns appear as mappable in the Zapier editor.You'll then want to put a dummy row in:Now try adding a row to that sheet with Zapier:I have no idea why, but if you test it, you'll end up with this:Test again with different data and it will still add the row at the top:The only possible use case I had for this is if you wanted to have all the rows on a Google Sheet trigger a zap at

Trigger on rows added to your Google Sheet when your Zap was turned off

If you have a Zap that triggers from a new or updated row in a Google Sheet, and the Zap is off while rows are added to the sheet then it wont trigger from the changes when it's turned back on. Luckily, there's a really easy way to make the Zap 'see' the changes by using the version history of the sheet. Turn your Zap OFFGo to your Sheet. Click file > Version History > See Version History. Choose a version from before the changes were made and click 'Restore this Version'.Turn the Zap back ONGo back to the version history and restore the most recent version of the sheetWhen you do this the Zap will 'see' the changes made to the sheet and will trigger from any rows that were added/updated between the two versions!

Format Multiple Fields in a Single Step (e.g. upper case, lower case, proper case)

Let's say you need to format multiple fields from a step, like the output of an email parser trigger, for example.So you have this coming from your Zap step:Name: NICK SIMARDCountry: UNITED STATESEmployer: ZAPIERAnd you don't want to use a bunch of steps just to get those to be: Nick Simard, United States, Zapier. You can use Formatter to make those into line items, process them all using the formatting option you need, then make them back into text. Run a Zap every 2 Weeks

Hey zapier folk,I had the problem that for a customer a Zap has to be executed every two weeks. I would like to present my solution to you and I'am open to alternative solutions or issues I haven't considered. First I used the trigger "Schedule by Zapier" and selected "Every Week" as the event.In a code block I determine the weeks between the current day and the beginning of time (1970 😀). After that I determine with the modulo operation whether the week is even (0) or odd (1). import datetimedate_delta = datetime.date.today() - datetime.date.fromtimestamp(0)return {"continue" : int(date_delta.days/7)%2}Then I check with a filter if the Zap should be continued in even (0) or odd (1) weeks. I hope the description is sufficient.
