Trouble filtering PayPal transactions by item name in Zapier

Hello,

I am trying to set up a Zapier filter for after someone has made a purchase through PayPal. I have reviewed these forums and tried the steps:

I am having the same issue described on these forums. I do not have the option available to filter by “Item Name.” Please see video. Is there a workaround for this? What should I do to be able to filter three specific products when they are purchased on PayPal?

You could try using a Formatter or Code step to extract the product name from the PayPal data before the Filter step. Then you can filter based on that extracted value for each of the three products. I’d also check the raw PayPal trigger data to see which field contains the item details.

Hi @iyaliason

You may need to add a Search step as Zap 2 to find the Order/Product by ID to get the Item Name to Filter by.

Hi @iyaliason 👋 Did either of the suggestions from olivers or Troy here do the trick?

Want to make sure this got sorted, so please let us know how it went!

Hey,

I’m still trying to figure it out. I’m at a bit of a stand still, because while the transaction amounts are the same and the name of the item is the same--the transaction ID changes.

Presently, my understanding is that Zapier is asking me to search by these unique IDs. This isn’t effective, because these IDs change. I need it to search my the item name, which I do not see as an option. Are there any other options for me? It seems like there should be a solution here and I’m just not seeing exactly what it is.

Sorry to hear that @iyaliason. The transaction ID changing is expected, since that’s unique to each purchase. If you’re using a search action with the transaction ID, the ID would just be used to look up the full transaction/order details, in case PayPal returns the item names there. You’d then use the item name field from that search result in the Filter.

Looking at the video you shared earlier though, it looks like that may be default sample data in the test record. Can you try loading a new test record from a recent live PayPal sale and check whether it gives you an Item Names field? PayPal’s sample data doesn’t always match the fields that come through from real sales, so thinking a real sale test record may show the field you need.

If you do see Item Names, you should then be able to pass that directly to the Filter step and check whether it contains one of the three product names.

If the live test record still doesn’t include the item names, could you let us know how the purchases are being made? For example, are they coming from a PayPal button/link, or from an online store where PayPal is used as the payment processor? That’ll help us figure out a different way to approach it.
