Question

How to add a due date in Notion without entering a start date

I’ve created a process where I can email a task into a task list and it creates a database item in Notion (the database is essentially a task management tool). The body of the email contains text as follows:

Description:

Duration:

Deadline:

Priority:

I’m then using Formatter in Zapier to extract the strings for each parameter and add them into the relevant columns in Notion, with the Subject line of the email being the name of the task.

All works fine except that Zapier insists on me entering a start date and a due date, even though the column in Notion is just ‘Due date’. I’ve disabled the ‘End date’ and ‘Include time’ options in Notion, so it shouldn’t be expecting a start date. If I enter the start date and end date as the same in the Zap, it ends up putting both dates into the Notion Due Date field (eg 31/03/2025 → 31/03/2025).

Can anyone advise on what I can do to get this to work? The task management board in Notion relies on me being able to sort by date, otherwise it's no use to me, and manually entering the dates defeats the purpose of creating a Zap.

Any help appreciated,

Thanks
Adrian

Hi @seraphanx

Why not set the Start Date to the date for “today”?

Hi @Troy Tessalone

Thanks for your reply. The problem is that it doesn’t matter what date I put as the start date, the issue is that it puts both dates into one column in Notion. So if I put today (17th) as the start date and 31st as the end date, it shows the dates as 17/03/2025 → 31/03/2025 in the Due Date column, which means I can’t sort it by due date, which is kinda the whole point of the Notion database

@seraphanx

For us to have more info, post these screenshots:

  • how your Zap steps are outlined and configured in EDIT mode with the field mappings visible
  • how your Notion is configured

Hey there, @seraphanx! Just checking in to see how things are going with this—were you able to get everything sorted out?

If so, and you’re open to it, it’d be great if you could share what the solution was—it could really help others that are having similar issues with Notion 🙏

Looking forward to hearing from you!
