I am encountering an issue with one of my Zaps, specifically in the "Send Email" step using Gmail. During testing, I receive the following error message:
"Failed to create a message in Gmail: The app returned 'Unauthorized'."

Here are some details about the issue:

  • I have already configured the Gmail account in the Zap and passed the setup and configuration steps successfully.
  • The error only appears during the "Test" phase.
  • I ensured that I have provided the necessary permissions to Zapier to access my Gmail account.

Could any one please guide me on how to resolve this? Let me know if any additional details or screenshots are needed.

Hello @Probe42, welcome to the Community! 🎉

Looks like you’ve also reached out to our Support team and they identified that the issue was down to the selected value in the Attachments field. It seems that the file permissions for the attached spreadsheet are not set to be publicly accessible could well be why the Gmail app isn’t able to access the file. Not sure if you’ve seen their email yet but thought I’d share the details from it here in case it’s helpful to you, or anyone else coming across this in page in future:

“I can see here that you are receiving the error message: "Failed to create a message in Gmail: The app returned 'Unauthorized'." with the Send Email in Gmail action step.

I checked our internal logs, and it looks like the error is related to the attachment added in the Send Email action step.

Can you confirm if the public access permission is enabled on this file? If not, I suggest to set it to Public.”

You can find out more about how to send files between different apps here: Send files in Zaps

Hope that helps to get it working. Please do keep us updated on how you get on—keen to ensure you’re all set! 🙂
