Hi, new to zapier and trying to set up my first zap. I am keeping things simple, intending to use the free version.

This is my work flow (I think that is the right term):

  1. In gmail flag emails from a specific sender, apply unique label and forward to myownname@zapiermail.com.
  2. Set up trigger for Email by Zapier / New Inbound Email, using Email Address of myownname@zapiermail.com, and Email address type of User-specific.
  3. Set up action for SMS by Zapier / Send SMS, choosing From Number randomly from list, and Message of “Some alpha-numeric text [Current Time]”.

Have not been able to get this to work, so have some questions…

  • In step 2 above under the Configure tab, there is a wonky address in the Email Address field (.i6XXXX@zapiermail.com) that I cannot remove. I was able to input myownname address, but when I hit copy, it concatenates my specified address with the wonky one. So how do I 1. get rid of that wonky address, and 2. Do I need to do anything more to set up my zapier email account?
  • In step 3 above, I was hoping to use the subject line from the zappier email to text to my cell#. Is there an easy way to do that? I had originally tried {{subject}} but that doesn’t work.

Thanks in advance, W.

I was able to make this work by understanding how the email addresses work in Email by Zapier → New Inbound Email. I came to the conclusion that the “wonky” text in the Email Address field was actually the tail end of my my zapier email address so I entered myownname in the field which resulted in a zapier email address of myownname.i6XXXX@zapiermail.com.

Once I got a valid email address to use and successfully tested that step, I was able to see fields, like “subject”, that I could use in my SMS by Zapier action.

Hi @BigW60

FYI...If your Zap is 3+ steps, you will need a Zapier paid plan to turn the Zap ON.

How to map variables between Zap steps: https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/8496343026701-Send-data-between-steps-by-mapping-fields

For us to have more info about what you are referring to post screenshots showing how your Zap steps are outlined and configured in the CONFIGURE table while in EDIT mode with the field mappings visible.

Troy, I believe my zap is only 2 steps. While I listed 3 steps in my workflow, the first step was outside the scope of zapier -- Applying a label to specific emails in Gmail and forwarding them to my zapier email address.
