Question

The trigger new reaction added (Agents)

Hi! In the workshop AI Agent for Productivity | Build Better AI Agents for Everyday Work Emily uses a trigger called “new reaction added”. On my end I see only the trigger “new reaction added to a channel”. I need to cover not only channels but also DMs with this Agent. Does anyone know if the trigger was changed and how I can make the Agent to search in DMs as well?

Hey @NathalieVlv,

It’s strange because the video is recent but maybe Emily has access to new release of Slack integration that is not made public. It’s best to confirm by contacting the Zapier support here- https://zapier.com/app/get-help.

Maybe you can join the https://zapier.com/early-access program to get features before they are made public. But I am not sure if the New Reaction added trigger will also appear in that.

A workaround could be using New Saved Message trigger. Hope it helps!

Hi Sparsh!

Thank you for the idea of using New Saved Message trigger!

I’ve already contacted the support but they don’t know anything about the trigger Emily was using.

Since the video is public on YouTube I didn’t assume that she was using smth that was not available yet. But maybe it’s the case.

Hey @NathalieVlv,

I think I got the issue. Emily is using the Slack version 1.0.9 which is a previous version of Slack integration for Zapier.

They just renamed or changed it to New Reaction added in a channel to be more specific as you can see in the video that it’s being used in a Slack Channel only.

Yeah you can try the New Save message one otherwise you will have to use it in a private channel. Hope it helps!

Hi there @NathalieVlv 👋

I checked and Sparsh is correct, that trigger name was updated to be specific to reactions in Slack channels. Did you have any luck with their suggestion of using the New Saved Message trigger for handling messages in DMs as well as channels?

Want to make sure you’re all set here, so please keep us posted on how it went 🙂

Hi @SamB ! Thanks for checking. The New Saved Message trigger didn’t work that well for my goal so I left this workflow for now. Maybe in the future it will be possible to trigger the flow in the DMs.

Hey @NathalieVlv,

Can’t you just make a private channel and then use New Reaction Posted in a Channel trigger?

If it’s important for you can try using Webhooks in Slack but it will be a bit more technical, Here is a helpful article about New Reaction Added Event here- https://docs.slack.dev/reference/events/reaction_added/.

You can then Catch Hook trigger from Webhooks in Zapier to catch that webhooks. A small caveat here is that even though it can work private DM’s but the app integration have to be added to that conversation. Here is a helpful article about Webhooks in Zapier here- https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/8496083355661-How-to-get-started-with-Webhooks-by-Zapier.

I know it can get a bit more technical and complex but if it’s important for you, you can give this approach a try. Hope it helps!

PS: If you need more active help, I’m happy to connect through my Zapier Solution Partner page if you’d like to reach out here- https://zapier.com/partnerdirectory/automation-jinn

Sorry to hear that @NathalieVlv. I did some checking and saw there’s an existing feature request for the ability to trigger Zaps from reactions in DMs, so I went and added your vote to that. I can’t make any promises as to when that functionality will be added but we’ll definitely send you an email notification once it is.

In the meantime, Sparsh’s suggestion of using Webhooks for the trigger instead could be a good approach.

Alternatively, you could give the New Pushed Message trigger a try. It’s not as quick as adding a reaction to a message but should allow you to send Slack DMs to a Zap.

Let us know how you get on if you give either of those approaches a try. Happy to lend a hand if you get stuck at all.
