I’m creating a Zap so when (1) new Subscriber (trigger) is added to an audience in Mailchimp it sends a specific campaign to that new subscribcer. Is the automation done within Zap or within the Mailchimp application?

In MailChimp you can set up automations like ‘when someone is added to an audience, send this email’ or ‘when a tag is added to someone, send this email’. MailChimp have a guide to automated campaigns here: https://mailchimp.com/help/about-automation/
Where Zapier can help is if you want an event in a separate app to trigger the automation. For example, when fills in a form, add them to the audience (which will trigger the automation in MailChimp).
