I’m new to Zapier and I want to connect it to my website (Custom Built) for email triggers.
Do I need an API?
I presently use Mautic for my newsletter

You can search Zap apps here: https://zapier.com/apps
Each Zap app has a profile page that lists the available triggers/actions.
You may want to use the Webhooks Zap app:

If you have an API you would be able to build a custom Zapier integration.
That said, we do have a Mautic integration, but it would be good to know in more detail just what you were trying to automate.

I want to automate emails to new sign-ups on my website.

The action Mautic provides in their integration is to create a new contact. So if you have a website signup trigger, you could then create a Zap to add that user to Mautic. Maybe Mautic has automation after that to send emails to new users?
