Overview

When someone completes a quiz in Google Forms, you can use Zapier to automatically send them their score by email. Google Forms handles the scoring natively using its Quiz mode, and Zapier picks up each new response and sends a personalized email with the result via Gmail. You don’t need to manually check responses or send scores one by one.

Step-by-step guide

Stage 1: Set up your Google Form as a quiz

  1. Open your Google Form and enable Quiz mode. Go to Settings, select the Quizzes tab, and toggle on Make this a quiz. This unlocks scoring and automatic feedback features.
  2. Add an answer key and assign points. For each question, click Answer key, select the correct answer, and set a point value. Google Forms will calculate the total score for each submission automatically.
  3. Make sure the form captures the respondent’s email address. Go to Settings, then Responses, and turn on Collect email addresses. The email address will be available as a field when you set up your Zap.
  4. Link your form to a Google Sheet. Open your form in Google Forms and click Responses > Summary. At the top right, click More then Select destination for responses. Choose to create a new spreadsheet or select an existing one, then click either Create or Select. Zapier requires form responses to be saved to a Google Sheet in order to trigger - the form itself cannot be connected directly.

Stage 2: Connect Google Forms to Gmail with Zapier

  1. Create a new Zap and set the trigger to New Form Response in Google Forms. Connect your Google account and select the Google Sheet linked to your form from the dropdown. Test the trigger to pull in a sample response.
  2. Add a Gmail Send Email action. In the To field, map the email address field from the Google Forms trigger. This ensures each email goes to the person who completed the quiz.
  3. Personalize the email with the respondent’s score. In the subject and body, use the data fields from the trigger to include the respondent’s name and total score. The total score is available as a field in the New Form Response trigger output.
  4. Turn on your Zap. Once active, every new quiz submission will automatically trigger an email with the respondent’s score.

Key notes and limitations

  • The Collect email addresses setting must be enabled in the form, otherwise the respondent’s email will not be available in the Zap trigger.
  • Google Forms Quiz mode only supports automatic feedback on individual questions, not a personalized overall summary. The total score field in Zapier lets you build a more customized email than Google Forms’ built-in feedback allows.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I send different feedback based on the score someone gets?
A: Yes, using Paths by Zapier. Add a Paths step after the Google Forms trigger and set conditions based on the total score field for example, one path for scores above 80% and another for scores below. Each path can then send a different email tailored to the score they received.

Q: Where do Google Forms responses get saved?
A: Google Forms automatically saves all responses to the linked Google Sheet. Every new quiz submission will add a new row, including the total quiz score.

Q: Do I need Zapier to score a Google Forms quiz?
A: No. Google Forms handles scoring natively in Quiz mode. Zapier is useful when you want to automate what happens after a submission for example, sending the respondent their score by email, adding results to a CRM, or notifying your team of new submissions.
