Question

Zapping action items from Fathom to Jira

I have built quite an easy Zap which is supposed to do the following: Collect action items generated by AI from Fathom → Create JIRA tickets in the To-Do phase

However, whenever Fathom generates multiple action items I experience only one action item is created in Jira, rather than multiple.

How does this occur?

Usually that happens because Fathom is sending the action items as a list/array, and Zapier is only using the first item in that field.

So the Zap itself is not really “looping” through each action item one by one it’s just taking one value and creating one Jira ticket.

I’d check whether the Fathom trigger is outputting:

  • one text field with all action items combined, or

  • a real line-item list

If it’s a list, you’ll usually need Looping by Zapier or a step that can handle line items so Zapier creates one Jira issue per action item.

So the issue is most likely not Jira it’s that the Fathom output is coming in as multiple items, but the Zap is only processing one of them.

Hi @MarkAnton

Info about Looping app: https://zapier.com/apps/looping/integrations#help

Help us have more info by posting screenshots showing how your Zap steps are outlined/configured in the CONFIGURE tab while in EDIT mode.

Thanks

It indeed creates a list of seperate bullet points. Could you help me setup the loop?

Hi @MarkAnton

Since Fathom sends the action items as separate bullet points, here's exactly how to set up the loop:

Step 1: Add the Looping Step

Click the "+" after your Fathom trigger, search for "Looping by Zapier" , and select "Create Loop From Line Items" .

Step 2: Tell the Loop What to Process

In the "Values to Loop" section:

  • Click "+" to add a new value

  • Name it something like "Action Item" in the left field

  • In the right field, select the Fathom field that contains your bullet points (look for "Action Items" or "Line Items" )

Step 3: Test the Loop

Click "Test." You'll only see the first action item—that's normal! The preview shows one item but the loop will process all of them when live.

Step 4: Add Jira Inside the Loop

Click the "+" button that appears inside the loop (not after it) and add your "Create Issue" action.

Step 5: Map Your Fields

In the Jira Summary field, select the "Action Item" value you created in Step 2. Map any other fields the same way.

Step 6: Test with Multiple Items

Here's the important part—test the Zap with actual multiple items:

  1. First, test the Jira step normally—it'll create one ticket using the first action item. This is expected.

  2. Do not publish yet. Instead, find a Fathom meeting that actually has multiple action items and run another test.

  3. When you test with multiple items, Zapier will show you a summary of how many times the loop ran and you'll see each Jira ticket created separately.

Step 7: Publish

Once you've confirmed it works with multiple items, go ahead and publish your Zap.

Quick tip: Don't use the preview_loop_values field—it looks tempting but won't work when live. Always use the field name you created (like "Action Item").

That's it! Now every action item from your meetings will automatically become its own ticket in Jira.

Hey @MarkAnton,

Yeah you would have to set up looping to fix the Zap. Here is a helpful article aboit looping in Zapier- https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/8496106701453-Loop-your-Zap-actions..

Depending on the trigger data, you will either have to use Loop from text or Loop from Line items action.

Hope it helps!
