Hello!

I’ve gotten Zapier notifications for my donor welcome series (non-profit) that “Possible error B to MC Donor Tags:”

  1. Mailchimp ran into an error: Member In Compliance State - [email 1] is in a compliance state due to unsubscribe, bounce, or compliance review and cannot be subscribed.
  1. Mailchimp ran into an error: Member In Compliance State - [email 2] is in a compliance state due to unsubscribe, bounce, or compliance review and cannot be subscribed.

When I have checked, the following are the issue:

  1. hardbounce due to constituent entering their email address incorrectly (last name was given and last name is in the email with an additional letter), they just donated
  2. unsubscribe in prior year, but they just donated again

Is it possible to fix these errors in Bloomerang and Mailchimp by adding the constituents back/resubscribing them to our mailing list? As far as I can tell, they did both get the thank you email but looks like they won’t be sent into the automation with donor tags. Is there another step to fix this in Zapier so that even if I make the other changes it will work?

Thank you,

Hi @Marya

Here is context about the error…

The Mailchimp API error message "is in a compliance state due to unsubscribe, bounce, or compliance review and cannot be subscribed" indicates that a contact's email address cannot be directly subscribed or resubscribed via the API or manual action because it has a specific status within Mailchimp's compliance protocols.

This status can arise from:
  • Unsubscribe: The contact previously unsubscribed from your list.
  • Bounce: The email address resulted in a hard bounce during a previous campaign, indicating it's no longer valid.
  • Compliance Review: Mailchimp's system has flagged the email address for a potential compliance issue, often related to list hygiene or spam complaints.
To resubscribe a contact in this state, the contact must initiate the resubscription process themselves. This typically involves:
  • Setting the contact's status to "pending" through the API. This action will trigger Mailchimp's double opt-in confirmation email to be sent to the contact.
  • The contact clicking the confirmation link in the email they receive. This action explicitly confirms their desire to resubscribe and updates their status to "subscribed" within Mailchimp.
Directly changing the status to "subscribed" via the API or manually is not permitted for these compliance-flagged contacts. This restriction is in place to protect users from unwanted subscriptions and maintain the integrity of Mailchimp's platform.
