I just reached out to Mailchimp Support about this issue as well, since it involves how data is being passed between Zapier and Mailchimp... but I wanted to check directly with your team too to make sure all bases are covered.
I’m reaching out on behalf of a client who’s experiencing a problem with how Mailchimp is handling data updates coming through Zapier from Hypeddit campaigns.
Here’s what’s happening:
They run download and pre-save campaigns through Hypeddit that collect new email signups. Those signups flow into Mailchimp via Zapier. Many fans sign up multiple times (through different campaigns or over time).
When they previously used IFTTT, Mailchimp would simply ignore duplicate signups, meaning existing contact data stayed untouched.
Now, using Zapier, Mailchimp correctly prevents duplicate contacts from being added, but it updates/overwrites existing contact fields whenever the same person signs up again.
Example:
If johnsmith@gmail.com first signs up and the contact is manually edited to show “John Smith,” then when that same fan signs up again, Mailchimp replaces the manually updated info with the new data coming from Zapier — which is often blank or incomplete.
This is forcing the client to manually fix contact names again every time a duplicate signup happens, which is becoming a daily time sink.
✨ Question:
Is there a way to configure the Zap so that, when a duplicate contact already exists in Mailchimp, Zapier does not overwrite existing fields… essentially skipping the update?
Any insight, filter, or action tweak that could prevent this overwriting would be a huge help.
