Why is my Excel Update Zap placing updates far down in the spreadsheet?

The Update Row Zap technically works, however the update is created 1000s of rows below the last row of data. I cannot figure out why this is happening.

Trying this again. Row ID setting is now 4. Hopefully, as more rows are added the system wont just update row 4.

Hey @wkawata,

Can you post screenshots of Data In and Data Out as well as how each Zap step is configured for us to have more context?

Creates a new row @ 22233?
I just don’t get it.

The zap does have the create new row if row is not found. However, per the Work Order data, 22233 is there on the list. Yet a new row is created and why so far down the sheet?

Hey @wkawata,

I think you are mapping it wrong. In the Update step, you have to map the row value from the Find Row action. Currently you are mapping the row from Cognito Forms trigger that’s why it’s creating a new row in 22233 row.

Here is a helpful article about updating rows in Excel- https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/8495980806669-Finding-Updating-Rows-in-Microsoft-Excel

Hope it helps!

I've mapped the Update Row - Row to the Excel column. Still getting updates further down the sheet.

Still, don’t understand the random choice to push the update so far down the Excel sheet.

Hey @wkawata,

Map the Row ID field as mentioned in the article. You will find this in the Data Out of Find Row action. It’s pushing down because it is considering you want to update 22233 row and as the data doesn’t exist there so it creates a new row there.

Hope it helps!

Thank you for the time to help sort this problem out. The issue remains. Updates are being sent far down the sheet. Now, the update is correct, the issue is why so far down the sheet. This is frustrating for sure.

Hey @wkawata,

As I already said you have to map the ID field( Right now you are mapping WorkOrder field) from Find Row action to update it correctly.

It will fix your issue. Also, it’s pushing down because it’s considering you want to update 22233 row and as the data doesn’t exist there so it creates a new row there.

Hope it helps!

Glad you were able to fix it. As long as you have mapped it dynamically, it will be fine.

Last question, how do I change Static to Dynamic mapping?

 Hey @wkawata,

Here is a helpful article about dynamic mapping- https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/8496343026701-Send-data-between-steps-by-mapping-fields. If you have mapped it from previous triggers/ actions rather than hardcoding the values, it will be fine. Hope it helps!

See now way to change this or why this one is static. This is now my real data set not the test.

No the Zap help was not accurate. I 1st had to use the 3 dots to change to Custom as there is no Plus Sign when already in Static mode. Oh the fun. Thank you for keeping me from pulling out all my hair.
