Question

Unexpected deletion of steps after removing Paths tool

Hello,

I encountered an issue while editing one of my Zaps.

I added a step between two existing activities using the built-in “Paths” tool. After testing, I decided to delete this Paths step. However, when I removed it, all the following steps in the workflow were also deleted automatically.

This behavior was unexpected and caused me to lose a significant part of my workflow.

Could you please let me know:

  • If this behavior is expected when using Paths?
  • And most importantly, if it is possible to restore a previous version of my Zap (before the deletion occurred)? (It was in draft)

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Hey @Quentin_coupe,

Yes this is expected behaviour.

But probably you can restore it to the previous Zap version. Here is a helpful article about it here- https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/9693520498445-Create-Zap-drafts-and-versions. Please note that you need to be on a paid plan for this.

Hope it helps!

Hi @Quentin_coupe

Info about UNDO in the Zap Editor: https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/34129169382029-Introducing-undo-in-Zaps

Help links for using Paths in Zaps: https://zapier.com/apps/paths/integrations#help

Deleting a Paths step deletes all path groups within that step, including nested paths.

Also, deleting a specific Path (e.g. Path A) will delete all the Steps within that specific Path.

This is expected and you can restore the previous versions if you had saved any of the previous version. If not, unfortunately you’d have to create those steps again. I was disappointed too when I experienced this for the first time.

Hi @Quentin_coupe

Yes, this is expected behavior. Deleting a Paths step removes all steps inside its branches, including any that were moved into it.

To restore: If you're on a paid plan, use Version History to revert to a version before you added the Paths step. If you're on the free plan, you'll need to rebuild the steps.

Tip for next time: Use Undo (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z) immediately after accidental deletion—it can restore everything instantly.

@Quentin_coupe

(see screenshot below)

When you attempt to delete a Path step or a path branch, there is a double confirm with this message:

Are you sure you would like to delete this?

Deleting a path step or a path branch deletes all the subsequent steps.

Yes this can happen with the new Paths behavior. When you add a Paths step in the middle of a Zap, Zapier automatically moves all following steps into a path branch, so deleting that Paths step can remove those downstream steps too.

For recovery: if you still have Undo available in the editor, try that first. Zapier says undo now supports removing/adding/reordering steps.

If not, check Version rollback. Zapier says it can recover steps from a prior version by creating a new draft from that version, but availability depends on your plan and on whether you have a previous saved version to roll back to.
