Troubleshooting CloudConvert API connection issues with Zapier

Hello!

Testing some document flows with Google Drive and CloudConvert. I’m running into trouble connecting CloudConvert to Zapier.

Returning this error when testing the CloudConvert step. I’ve tried requesting a file conversion from one format to another and also adding a watermark to a PDF.

Error Message:
The app returned "The request is missing a valid API key.".

  • Tried revoking access to Zapier from CloudConvert, then reconfiguring access
  • Tried Creating a new zap without any additional steps
  • Tried a different CloudConvert action

Any advice? The few posts I found were all self resolved without explanation. Please see some screenshots attached.

Check if the mapped value for the file is a direct download link.

Check by copy/pasting the file url into a new/different private browser.

That should initiate a download of the file, if not, then you need to use a different file url.

Hi @chris1730

Check your Zap app connections here: https://zapier.com/app/connections

Thanks @Troy Tessalone, I did check my connection prior, also just validated at that link. I appreciate your response.

Hi there, @chris1730 👋

Looking at the error I’m wondering if it’s due to CloudConvert not having the right permissions to access the file in Google Drive. 🤔

Can you try adding a Add File Sharing Preference (Google Drive) action into the Zap, before the CloudConvert action. Set the permissions for it file to be Anyone on the internet who has the link can view. Then test the CloudConvert action again to see if it’s then able to convert the file.

Keep us posted on how it goes!

@Troy Tessalone - Done and I linked to this thread. Thanks!

@SamB - Good thing to double check, I have the entire folder structure that the files arrive to set to this setting on G Drive’s side. I did test adding this step to my Zap with the same result. :/ Thank you!

@Troy Tessalone - That got it! Was using the downloadUrl, but that was activating a Google API call causing the error, not a CouldConvert API error.

Switched to the Web Content Link from G Drive and it performed the step successfully! Thank you!

Nice work, @chris1730! 🙌 Glad to hear you got it sorted by using the file link in the Web Content Link field instead. And kudos to @Troy Tessalone for pointing you in the right direction! 👏

Seems like you’re all set for now, but feel free to reach back out to the Community if you need more help. In the meantime, happy Zapping! ⚡
