Stripe Test Mode Limitations: Unable to Manage Customers or Checkouts in Zapier Integration

Hello everyone,

I am currently trying to set up a workflow between Stripe (Sandbox) and Airtable using Zapier, but I’ve hit a roadblock regarding Test Mode functionality.

The Issue:

I have successfully connected Stripe to Zapier using the Test API Key. However, while the connection itself works, I am finding the Test Mode environment very restrictive for my specific needs. Specifically:

  • I am unable to manage customers effectively.

  • I cannot create Site Links or Checkouts within the test environment.

My Goal:

I need to test fundamental triggers and actions, such as customer updates and successful checkouts, to ensure the data flows correctly into Airtable before moving to a live production environment.

My Questions:

  1. Is there a specific configuration in Zapier or Stripe that allows for full "Sandbox" functionality (including Checkout/Customer management) while using Test API keys?

  2. Are there known limitations regarding "Site Links" in Test Mode that I might be overlooking?

  3. Would you recommend a different approach for testing Stripe-to-Airtable automations without using live data?

I have already consulted the Stripe/Zapier documentation and searched the community forums but haven't found a solution that addresses these specific limitations.

Any insights or workarounds would be greatly appreciated!

Hello @Huschkusch

This is expected Stripe Test Mode behavior, not a Zapier issue.

Stripe Test Mode isn’t a full sandbox. Checkout only works through test Checkout Sessions, and Site Links are deprecated so they won’t work the way you’re expecting. Customer data can be created and updated, but only via test-mode flows that actually generate events.

For testing with Zapier, the best option is to run Checkout in Test Mode using test cards so real webhooks fire. Many folks then do a quick live-mode test and refund it before going fully live.
