AI by Zapier fails on Preview with the error “No authentication_id provided”.
I am using the Standard tier with GPT-4o mini, not Bring Your Own Key.
The same error occurs on a brand-new AI by Zapier step with a simple prompt.
According to Zapier documentation, Standard uses Zapier's built-in models and should not require my own OpenAI authentication.
Could you check whether built-in AI authentication is correctly enabled for my workspace?
“No authentication_id provided”

Hey
I noticed you reached out to our Support Team and they were able to help sort it. I’ll share the solution they gave you here in case it helps others coming across this in the future:
The AI by Zapier step is sending an empty authentication value, which shows as 0 in our logs, instead of the Zapier-provided one. That's what produces "No authentication_id provided", and it's why a brand-new step with a simple prompt fails in the same way. The field tends to quietly reset while a step is being edited.
Here's how to clear it:
- Open Zap and click into the AI by Zapier step.
- In the Authentication field, re-select your model (GPT-4o mini) so Zapier-provided is actively chosen. Please do this even if it already looks selected, because the label can stay visible while the underlying value is blank.
- Save the step, test it, then republish the Zap.
I’ll mark this as the best answer since that seemed to do the trick, but let us know if you need help with anything else at all! 🙂
