I wish to update a matter in Clio Manage from data input into a Jotform. I am using Find Matter, so the flow is 1. Jotform, 2. Find Matter and 3. Update Matter. The Update Matter action step keeps returning errors. No idea what I am doing wrong. Any ideas? Error message is a variant of:

The "Update Matter" step in Clio is failing because it's attempting to update a custom field (customfield-text_line-73431) with a value from a previous step's nested data (SC-Name of Second Defender). However, the previous step's output shows this field contains a null value, which may not be accepted by the custom field, or the field reference itself may be incorrect or inaccessible.

Thanks Emmanuel. Zapier have advised it is a bug with Clio where the Find Matter action does not send the correct information through to the Update Matter action. At least I am not los8ig my mind anymore! Appreciate your attempt to assist.

Hi @NIsbets,

Without seeing the zap and studying the inputs/outputs I’m going to give you multiple angles to address this:

  1. Remove the datapill from the custom field in the Update Matter step
  2. One thing to check is whether customfield-text_line-73431 is configured as a required custom field in Clio, if there’s a toggle I would turn it off and set it as not required
  3. Create a filter in Zapier that only proceeds to the “Update Matter” step if the custom field != null
  4. Hardcode the custom field with something inconsequential for the sake of syncing

Hope this helps or at least gives you a jump on troubleshooting!

Hello @NIsbets

Has this been resolved yet?

If not, Based on the error, I'd start by checking whether the "SC-Name of Second Defender" field is actually returning a value from Jotform for the test record you're using. The error suggests Clio may be receiving a null value or a field that isn't mapped correctly.

If the field is optional, you may also need a filter or conditional step before updating the matter.

Happy to take a look if you'd like:

Hey @NIsbets 👋

I had a look into the bug our Support team added you to and saw there was a potential workaround noted for it so wanted to share that here in case it’s helpful:

Instead of manually mapping the ID from the Find Matter action, you’d use the "Add search step" button in the Update Matter action to add the ID:

To do that you’d need to:

  1. Delete the existing Find Matter step.
  2. Click "Add search step" button in the Update Matter action. This will place a Find Matter step before that action (like the one you had before).
  3. Set up the new Find Matter action as you had it before.
  4. Test the new Find Matter step.

This should automatically map the Matter ID into the Update Matter action and leave the Custom Fields section intact.

Let us know how it goes if you give that a try, want to make sure you’re all set! 🙂
