I am triggering a Zap whenever a new contact is created or an existing contact is updated in Virtuous. The Zap triggers correctly every time.

However, I need to access a custom field we have created in the contact called “Relationship Manager’. When the Zap is triggered, I can see the Custom Fields and the Relationship Manager key and value in the ‘Data Output’ (screenshot shown below).

However, when I map the Custom Fields in the next step, it shows empty and with an “!”.

  1. Why is there no data shown for the Contact Custom Fields?
  2. What does the “!” mean? (Notice that the First Name field maps correctly below it.)
  3. How do I access the Custom Fields if not through the provided mapping?

Hi @PeaceWise

You need to map the variable that has “Relationship Manager” in the name of the variable.

Hi Troy,

Thanks for your response. There is no variable in the drop down list that includes ‘Relationship Manager’, even though that appears in the data output screenshot. The only related field in the drop down list is ‘Contact Custom Fields’. There are no subfields of ‘Contact Custom Fields’ included in the drop down list.

Here are the steps…

Zap Steps

Here are the fields I can choose from (filtered) in Step 2.

Custom fields I can choose from first step
relation fields I can choose from first step

@PeaceWise

Try this trick to get a live Zap Run to be used as Zap trigger example record to configure the Zap action steps:

Thanks @Troy Tessalone! That worked perfectly.

The link you provided links to another very useful article https://help.zapier.com/hc/en-us/articles/33561391372429-Modify-test-records-in-Zaps#h_01JR6FV3XMS9SN9JS32TXDD5K5

Great to see this got sorted, @PeaceWise! 🎉 Glad Troy was able to point you in the right direction—thanks for helping out here @Troy Tessalone! 🙌

Hope you both have a great rest of your week!
