How to efficiently manage delays in main and sub Zaps for processing records

Have a main zap calling multiple sub-zaps. Using delays and delay que. cannot process more then a hand full of records without delays and it failing. Any suggestions? Need to process hundreds. Delays don’t seem to wait until complete then run next loop, all hit at same time. Thank you.
