Question

How to create a Pinterest pin design in Canva using Zapier AI

I am trying to use a zap to take a blog article I wrote and send it to canva to create an seo optimized design to canva.

I grab the blog title and run it through zapier AI to create an SEO optimized title for use in Pinterest. I also have it generate an AI prompt for the design to be generated in canva.

The problem is, there’s no where I can find to actual use that prompt and send it to canva for the design of the pin.

What am I doing wrong? Everything tests fine. A pin is created but it doesn’t have an image.

Hey @stylinspirit 👋 Welcome to the Community!

To better assist you, could you share a screenshot of the Create Design step - Configure tab? Please make sure to blur or cover any sensitive data in the screenshot before sending it over.

It is likely that some fields have not been configured yet because they are not loading for you in the editor as mentioned, resulting in the Pinterest step to upload a blank image in the pin.

Regarding a prompt, at the moment the Create Design step will generate a design by placing an asset in it. It is not possible to input a prompt to generate a custom design from scratch.

Looking forward to your reply!

This is where I really got confused because I couldn’t find where I could map the prompt I created in the zapier AI evaluate and return step. In that step I asked the AI to return a prompt for the creation of a prompt based on the title to send to Canva to direct the creation of the pin.

The entire zap is:

Shopify Blog Title → Zapier AI Evaluate and Return → Canva Create Design → Canva Export Design → Delay by Zapier → Canva Get Design Export Job → Pinterest Create Pin

The delay step was suggested by the Help folks at Zapier. If there is a way to streamline this so it doesn’t need as many task, that would be great too.

Hi @stylinspirit 👋

This is where I really got confused because I couldn’t find where I could map the prompt I created in the zapier AI evaluate and return step. In that step I asked the AI to return a prompt for the creation of a prompt based on the title to send to Canva to direct the creation of the pin.

As Marge mentioned, there’s no field on the Create Design action where you could enter a prompt to have Canva generate the image. I’d suggest contacting our Support team to submit a new feature request for the ability to create images from text prompts be added. You can do that here: https://zapier.com/app/get-help

That said, I’ve just had a look at Canva’s API and it doesn’t look like they currently have an endpoint for generating an image with AI. And there’s no option to supply a prompt with their Create design endpoint, these are the only options:

So we’d need to wait for that functionality to be added to Canva’s API before we can add it to the Create Design action in the Canva app on Zapier.

In the meantime, it might be worth using an AI tool to generate the image. The ChatGPT app for example has a Generate An Image with DALL-E action that you can give a prompt to and it will create an image based on the prompt:

The delay step was suggested by the Help folks at Zapier. If there is a way to streamline this so it doesn’t need as many task, that would be great too.

The Delay action wouldn’t could towards your task usage. You can see the full list of apps that don’t affect your task usage here: What does not count toward task usage?

Hope that helps for now. If you give that workaround a try and get stuck at all just let us know and we’ll be happy to assist further! 🙂

So it sounds like the “Crete Design” piece in Canva isn’t at all functional, as I was led to believe.

I’m trying to create a design from a spreadsheet and having a similar issue. I have the title and the text for the design in columns in the google sheet, but all the zap does is create a blank design with the title. No text, no image.

Hi @dlars,

It seems like Canva doesn't display designs in Recent Designs until you've opened/viewed it.

Could you please try to:

  • Check the Project tab of Canva (the design should appear there)
  • Copy one of the URLs from the test output and paste that into the browser (that should open the design, causing it to appear in Recent Designs after a refresh)

Kindly give it a try and let me know how it goes? I'll keep an eye out for your response!
