I’m doing the Customize your Zap module and trying to use Formatter by Zapier → Text → Split Text.

Here’s my setup:

  • Input: email field from my trigger (e.g. xxxxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com)

  • Separator: @

  • Segment Index: Second

When I test the step, the result is completely blank — even though the input clearly shows a valid email address. I also tried “All (as line-item)” and typing a test email manually, but still no output.

I’ve retested the trigger, reselected the input field, and even rebuilt the step from scratch — same result.
Has anyone seen this before? Is it a sample-data issue or a Formatter bug?

Hi @NomarNoZap

Try using this segment: Last

For us to have more info, post screenshots showing how your Formatter step is configured in EDIT mode.

Hi Troy,
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried setting the Segment Index to Last, but I’m still getting a blank output.

I’ve attached screenshots showing my full Formatter setup in Edit mode (Input, Separator, and Segment Index). Could you please take a look and let me know if I’m missing something?

Thanks again for your help.

@NomarNoZap

Formatter can not be the last step in a Zap.

I tested with these segments and both worked:

  • Second
  • Last

Check to make sure you do no have any extra spaces before/after the separator: @

Hey @NomarNoZap 👋 Did Troy’s suggestion help you to get it sorted?

Keep us posted on how it went!

Hi Troy and Sam,

Thanks for following up.

  • I tried setting the Segment Index to Last, but the output is still blank.
  • There are no spaces before or after the “@” in the separator.

The Formatter step isn’t the last step in the Zap - as I understand it’s a utility step that runs between two others. I just stopped editing the Zap at that point when the error happened during testing.

Since the setup itself looks fine, could you please advise on what else I should check?

In the meantime, I’ll try and restart the whole workflow and see if anything changes. Keeping you in touch.

@NomarNoZap

Try deleting the Formatter Zap step, then configure a new Formatter Zap step to make sure there are no leading/trailing spaces around the @ separator.
