I have a fairly simple zap, an Email Parser is sent an email with an attached csv which comes through as a hydrated file (hydrate|||.eJwtT8...qrTE|||hydrate). A Files by Zapier step is used to extract the csv data from the attachment, and then the final step is to upload this data somewhere.

 

When testing the steps via the Zapier GUI it works fine every time, the Files by Zapier step successfully takes the attachment as an input (hydrated file) and provides a csv data output.

 

However when this runs automatically (when an email comes through), the output of the Files by Zapier step is just the hydrated file text again (hydrate|||.eJwtT8...qrTE|||hydrate). I can’t see why this works fine when I test the step, but doesn’t work when the step runs itself - it should be the same behaviour.

 

Does anyone know why this might be happening or how to fix this? Or if there’s an easy alternate way to grab the data from a csv attachment? I also tried a Webhook > Get step (as per this guide) but this always also returns the hydrated file text not the data (same as this person).

Check your Zap Runs history details to see the DATA IN/OUT for each step to help you troubleshoot: https://zapier.com/app/history/

For us to have more info, post screenshots showing how your Zap steps are outlined and configured in EDIT mode with the field mappings visible.

If I understood correctly, you’re experiencing issues with the output of a Files by Zapier step that comes from an Email Parser trigger. Feel free to clarify if this isn’t right!


From your description, I’m wondering if the issue may be related to the format of the file that triggered the Zap. When you open the attached file from the trigger, does it look like you expect? Is it a csv file, or another format?

And so we can check this for you, could you share screenshots (making sure no personal information is visible) of your Zap’s set up?

Hi there,

 

The format of the file is fine, it’s a csv. The examples I gave in the post are essentially the data in and out where the problem is (though I cut out the middle of the hydrated string for clarity). Also, as mentioned this works on the same example, exact same files when pressing the test buttons - it only fails when running automatically.

As you can see, it’s pretty simple and not much room for configuration issues. And on this same Zap and same step, if I were to pull this same file as a new test record, it works fine, where the data out is the appropriate CSV.

Possible workaround is to use this Zap action: Formatter > Utilities > Import CSV File
