I'm encountering a critical error when attempting to post a video through Zapier's Instagram for Business integration.

Zapier is currently using a deprecated version of the Instagram Business API. In the Instagram Business App, Zapier only supports two post types: Image and Video. However, the Video media type (VIDEO) has been deprecated by Instagram. According to Facebook's latest API documentation, the proper media type for video posts is now Reels (REELS).

Here is the error message returned during the Zap run:
This Instagram for Business step hit an error
Could not upload video file. Invalid parameter: Unsupported media type VIDEO: The VIDEO value for media_type is deprecated. Use the REELS media type to publish a video to your Instagram feed. Please visit https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-api

I investigated this issue with Facebook API Support, and they confirmed that the problem is on Zapier’s side. Zapier has not updated the media_type to support REELS, which means users can no longer publish videos to Instagram through Zapier. This limitation effectively blocks any ability to post Reels or standard video content using Zapier’s Instagram integration.

To clarify:

The Video type used in Zapier is deprecated and no longer accepted by Instagram’s API.

The correct replacement is Reels (REELS), but this is not yet supported in Zapier.

As a result, any Zap attempting to upload video content will fail until Zapier updates the integration to align with the current Instagram API standards.

For reference, I can provide a specific log of a failed run:

Note: The app used in this Zap has since been deleted due to the frequent errors encountered, but this particular run still shows the problem clearly.

Please let me know if you need anything else from my end. This is a critical blocker, and I’d appreciate it if your team could prioritize updating the Instagram integration to support the required media types.

Thanks.

Hi @Growce

If you suspect a bug, you should report it to Zapier Support: https://zapier.com/app/get-help

Hi @Troy Tessalone ,

Thank you for your response.

I’ve already submitted a detailed report to Zapier Support, as suggested. However, I posted here in the community because no clear resolution or timeline has been provided so far, and the issue remains unresolved.

This is not just a minor bug — it's a critical platform-level problem caused by Zapier’s use of a deprecated Instagram Business API. The current setup still uses the VIDEO media type, which has been officially deprecated by Meta. As a result, users can no longer post any video or Reel content through Zapier’s Instagram integration.

I've confirmed this directly with Meta’s API support, who clearly stated that the issue is on Zapier’s side, due to the outdated media type. This is significantly impacting users who rely on this functionality for their business operations.

I’m posting here in the community to:

  1. Make the issue visible to other users who may be experiencing the same problem.

  2. Request a public and transparent response from Zapier regarding the resolution and expected timeline.

  3. AND If anyone has an alternative solution, temporary workaround, or additional information related to this issue, please share it here so the whole community can benefit.

Thanks,

@Growce

The short term workaround would likely involve using this Zap action: Instagram for Business - API Request

This would be used to make an API request using the Instagram API: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/instagram-platform/

Hi @Growce, welcome to the Community! 🎉

Thanks so much for flagging this here. Really sorry you’ve run into this bug—it’s clear this is having a big impact. Super appreciate the time you’ve taken to explain everything, it really helps us to understand the situation.

I checked your Support ticket and found the bug report you were added to. So I’ve gone ahead and linked it to this thread so we can keep you posted there too. As the Support team mentioned, we don’t have a timeline to share on a fix, but you’ll get an email from the team as soon as there’s any news. And if anyone else chimes in here, we’ll make sure they get added to the report as well, which will help to raise its priority.

Keep us posted on how things go with that API Request action Troy suggested. Want to help get things back up and running as soon as possible.

Thanks for bearing with us in the meantime! 🙏
