I am new to Zapier and AI automation but many years experience coding.

Trying to set up a simple Zap to open a Google Form on my Google Drive.

The drive is not shared, I am the owner. I do have some folders and docs on the drive that were shared with me, but the Google doc I need is showing as owned by me.

I have ready several threads on this, haven’t found a solution but apparently @Troy Tessalone is the master of this so I hope he can opine and help me solve this.

I have made several screenshots to help with troubleshooting:

When I get to the next step, a pop up appears but it only shows a generic “My Google Drive”, not the one where all my data is. When I select this drive, the pop up closes and I am back where I started.

Below are my connections. I tried deleting and re-connecting without success:

Hi @Plastic Doc

For the dropdown fields, try using the h...] button to switch to “Custom” mode, then input the ID of the Folder/File.

@Troy Tessalone - I need a little more guidance here. This is my first experience with Zap and things you may take for granted as obvious I do not see.

Here is the ID for the Google Drive folder:  1hd0RoYhOPc5pojDE-k2UMRqGCGVXGgl3

The Google Docs file I am interested in is the Day 3 - Marketing file in the below screenshot.

Where am I placing it? Does it go in the “Drive containing custom template” field as a custom text? If so, then what am I entering in the following field, “Folder containing the custom template”? Or, do I put no entry in the drive field and just put this text in the folder field - that makes no sense. I need somewhat to first specify the drive, right? Should it be in the form of a URL?

Can you please for this example show me exactly what you enter where. I know from my reading other posts this is a very common issue - not sure why Zapier does not fix this. A good, well described work around for novice users like myself will prove very useful to the community.

Here is what I tried based upon what you told me. The article you suggested was very general and did not help me in this case.

@Plastic Doc

For a dropdown field, click the h...] button to the right of the field, change to “Custom” mode, then enter a static value of the Folder/File ID from GDrive.

@Troy Tessalone

  1. what do I enter in the drive box
  2. what format do I enter the folder ID? I tried the ID itself and it did not work

@Plastic Doc

For us to have more context, post screenshots showing how your Zap step is now configured.

At a minimum, you need to fill out the required fields, which are denoted with a red asterisk. *

The Folder field would expect the ID of the GDrive Folder.

The Template field would expect the ID of the GDrive File.

From your screenshot, the ID of the GDrive Folder is after “folders/” and starts with “1hd...”

This is the configuration of the zap, as shown in my original question:

This is where I tried to enter the required data:

This is the actual file:

I guess the file ID is either d/11X10gR8o_VS1A2SsaVARrnX2bSMr3eCf/edit#heading=h.yli207akvp9c or

11X10gR8o_VS1A2SsaVARrnX2bSMr3eCf/edit#heading=h.yli207akvp9c

I already gave you the Google drive folder ID.

What are the entries I need to make for the google drive, the folder and template document?

@Plastic Doc

The GDrive File ID is the id after the “/d/” and before the “/” shown in the screenshot.

TIP: Also try asking ChatGPT for help and guidance.

Thank you for that, and I do appreciate your time in helping me. I would like an answer to my question about what to fill in the Google drive box. Without this, nothing else will work. Can you please answer that for me? If you require more info or screenshots please let me know, but I do believe that I provided adequate information to answer my question. Please see screenshot below:

@Plastic Doc

TIP: Click field labels to see tooltips with more info that can provide guidance.

The Drive field is optional, you do not need to fill it out unless you want to.

If all of your Folders are your “My Drive”, then the default would be the only available option to select from the dropdown list: My Google Drive

The Folder field is optional, you do not need to fill it out unless you want to.

If you have the GDrive Folder ID, then input that as a static value.

The Template field is required, you need to fill it out.

If you have the GDrive Folder ID, then input that as a static value.

TIP: When in doubt, test it out. (Often the error messages help guide you as to what is needed to fix.)

OK that sounds good. Thank you so much @Troy Tessalone. I now have a better idea as what to do. I will try to implement what you indicated in the last comment and report back. May be a few days as i am traveling.

Keep us posted on how it goes @Plastic Doc. Want to make sure this gets sorted. And safe travels! 😎

Thank you @SamB - this seems to be a common issue. When I get it all sorted out I will try to summarize so that everyone can benefit from this thread.

Hi @Plastic Doc,

Just keep us posted on this so we can assist you further if needed. Thank you
