Troubleshooting missing Trello Custom Fields in Zapier Zaps

Long time user here.

I’ve been dealing with an issue in Zapier where Custom Fields from Trello no longer appear in my Zaps. This has been going on for a few months now. At first, I assumed it was a temporary bug that Zapier would eventually fix, so I waited. But now that I’ve started searching for solutions, I realize I seem to be one of the only ones experiencing this.

 

The problem is that in my existing Zaps, Custom Fields still work—as long as I don’t make any changes. However, if I edit a Zap that previously referenced Custom Fields, they stop working, and I can no longer access them. When trying to create a new Zap, Custom Fields are simply missing from the available options altogether.

 

I’ve tried several things to fix this:

• Reconnecting my Trello account in Zapier

• Creating new Zaps from scratch

• Checking my permissions in Trello (I have full admin rights)

• Looking for any recent changes related to Trello’s Custom Fields integration in Zapier

Note: In “Find new records”, when I select a card I do see the Custom Fields and the data from the card. But in following steps it’s gone.

 

So far, nothing has worked, and I haven’t found anyone else reporting this exact issue.

 

Has anyone else run into this? Could it be related to an API change, or is there some kind of permission issue I’m overlooking? More importantly, does anyone know of a workaround to make Custom Fields accessible again in Zapier?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear the custom fields are missing! Which Trello trigger or action are they missing from?

You mentioned that it’s working on your previous Zaps, but stops working after you make changes. What sort of changes are you making and do those changes involve you updating the Zap to run a newer version of the Trello app? If so it could be that there’s a bug that’s affecting the newer version of the Trello app—in which case you might be able to get around the issue for the moment by duplicating your working Zaps, not upgrading the Trello app and making any necessary changes to the fields.

That said, I would recommend reaching out to our Support team to investigate this further. They’ll be able to confirm whether it’s definitely a bug and can get it flagged to our engineers to be fixed.

So your questions made me think some more on this and I’ve been trying to pin down when the problem occurs. After some testing it turns out I was the one messing up here.

Looks like I’ve become somewhat lazy these last months not setting which Board in the Action steps, only the ID for the card. But with some testing I found out that it was the Board setting that actually pulls the Custom Fields data.

I thought it wasn’t important because it wasn’t a mandatory field. Though it wasn’t mandatory, seems like it’s pretty crucial anyway :)
