ActiveCampaign Issue: Unable to tag bounced email addresses

I want to create a simple Zap: When an email campaign from ActiveCampaign bounces, I want the bounced email address to be tagged. I created the trigger: New Campaign Bounce. I tested it, and it’s fine. I can’t figure out how to add the tag, though.

I tried Add/Remove Tag from Contact. But when I test it, it insists that it doesn’t know what contact to add the tag to. I want it to add the tag to whatever contact had the bounced campaign.

What in between step am I missing?

Hi @gloopy

You may be able to configure that logic using a native ActiveCampaign Automation.

For us to have more info, post screenshots showing the DATA OUT from Zap step 1 that you are trying to use.

Hi @gloopy,

Welcome to the Community.

To tag contacts in ActiveCampaign when their email bounces, set the trigger to "New Campaign Bounce" in ActiveCampaign. Then, add a "Find Contact" action to locate the bounced email address. Follow this with an "Add/Remove Tag from Contact" action, using the found email and specifying the desired tag. This setup should effectively tag bounced contacts. If issues persist, Kindly post a screenshot of your setup and obscure any sensitive information for security purposes.

Thank you.

This is how I have it set up at the moment, @JammerS. I added the “Find Contact” bit, but I’m guessing I’ve done the configuration wrong somehow? That’s just my guess.

Hi @gloopy,

It seems that the Zap setup is correct. Are you also getting any error messages when firing this Zap?

@JammerS I’ve attached screenshots of what it looks like when I test steps 2 and 3.

Step 2 says: Failed to find a contact in ActiveCampaign. Error from halted execution: Nothing could be found for the search.

Step 3 says: Failed to create a contact tag in ActiveCampaign. The app returend “invalid value ofr query parameter contactTag.contact”.

It’s not really crazy that Step 3 doesn’t work if Step 2 doesn’t, but I don’t know what I’m doing wrong for Step 2.

Hi @gloopy,

Before we dig deeper into this, could you please send a screenshot of the “CONFIGURE” section of the ActiveCampaign action steps? Please ensure that all of the fields are captured in the screenshot so that I can take a closer look.

Please don't include personal information in the screenshot, or be sure blur out any personal information.

Thank you!

Hi @gloopy,

It looks like the Zap is using a placeholder sample data which means that it doesn’t use real sample data hence the error. I’d recommend skipping the action steps and publishing the Zap and doing a live test to see if the Zap works in real time.

Kindly give it a try and let me know how it goes? I'll keep an eye out for your response!

Hey there, @gloopy 👋

Did skipping the test for that ActiveCampaign action and running a live test with a real email address, as Ken suggested, do the trick?

Want to make sure you’re all set—let us know if you need any further help! 🙏
