Deduplication, how does Zapier identify new records

Can someone please explain this to me:

When polling... "Zapier automatically deduplicates and sorts for the newest data from the API."

How does that work exactly?

Thanks, I’ve read the article, but it still wasn’t clear how they know an item is new or not. Fortunately, I found the answer while trying to pass data without id and got the following error message:
Invalid API Response: - Got a result missing the "id" property ({"name":"jean","age":22})

Nowhere I’ve seen in the docs/wizard that an id field is required. Having known that, I would have guessed they kept a record of the ids to know whether an item is new or not.
