Remove Parent link from JIRA Epic based on Airtable Update

Hi there,

I have a zap setup that syncs Epic Information from Jira to Airtable and from Airtable to Jira.

One property that is being synced is the Parent Link of the JIRA Epic (JIRA Datacenter). It works fine, as long as I replace the old Parent Link with a new Parent Link.
Unfortunately as soon as the Parent Link is removed in Airtable, the update to Jira gets triggered but the empty value is not set in JIRA as the sync seems to ignore the empty field. I tried to set the Parent Link in those cases to “   “ (three spaces) as this fixed my issues with empty values for syncs from Jira to Airtable but unfortunately seems not to work in this direction.

Any ideas how I could make sure the issue in JIRA is unlinked in case the link in Airtable is removed?

Thank you so much for your answer and your help!

I reached out to the Support team as suggested, but unfortunately, it's not possible in my setup to clear the field. I tried several options like “...”, “null”, “”, and so on, but none were successful.

The support team suggested overwriting the Parent Link, but there isn't a suitable value I can use without messing up the entire system.

After discussing with support, I tried out the workaround you suggested. I now add a label to the epics where the Parent Link needs to be removed and send myself an alert. Unfortunately, removing the Parent Link via Automation For Jira also did not work, as it seems the Parent Link field is somewhat special.

It might have been possible via API, but given that this situation is unlikely to occur frequently, adding the label and sending an automatic alert to myself works fine for now.

Ah, yes usually if a field is left blank it would remain untouched so that all fields that are left blank aren’t cleared accidentally. I’d recommend reaching out to our Support team to put in a feature request for the ability to be able to select a “clear field” option to remove value from a field in Jira. You can do that here: https://zapier.com/app/get-help 

That said, I wonder if there’s a workaround you could try by setting adding a specific label/tag to the issue? Then within Jira you could create an Automation that removes the parent link if an issue has that specific label/tag? It looks like it should be possible for a Jira Automation to remove a parent link: Automation For Jira - How to clear the Parent Link field when an issue is moved to a new type

I know it’s not an ideal solution I know but hopefully that would belp to get the parent links removed in the meantime. 🤞
