Question

How do I extract text data from Gmail attachments with various formats in my workflow?

Hi!

I’m trying to replicate the following task within Zapier - I was wondering if you would be able to help:

  1. New email in specific folder in Gmail
  1. Download attachment into specific folder on Gdrive
  2. Extract data from the attachment in text format (the attachment could be a variety of different formats)

I have achieved the first 2 steps, but I’m struggling to achieve step 3 as this will determine the rest of my Zap.

Any help would be hugely appreciated :-)

Thank you

Hi @Kacey

What are the possible file formats?

Different attachment types would likely need to be handled differently.

Hi @Troy Tessalone - thanks so much for your response.

The documents are CVs / Resumes so most common formats are .docx .pdf .odt .txt

Many thanks :-)

@Kacey

You can hydrate files to get the text for certain file types.

But if there is no consistent layout formatting of the file data, then that makes parsing the data more challenging and depends on which data points you are trying to parse.
