Hello! My name is Tom, and I’ll be guiding you through connecting OpenAI with Zapier to supercharge your workflow and take it to the next level.
If you're short on time, here’s a quick video summary. Below, you'll find a step-by-step guide to help you get set up:

When connecting an OpenAi account on Zapier, you'll need an API key, which you can generate on the OpenAI website.
Make sure you’re on the OpenAI API website, as many people confuse it with the ChatGPT website. To avoid any mix-up, use this link: https://platform.openai.com/. From there, log in or create an account if you don’t already have one.
After logging in, navigate to the top menu and select Dashboard. In the sidebar, click on API keys, then choose Create new secret key.
You can give the key any name, and for the project, you can leave it as the default. Then, click Create secret key
Be sure to copy the generated key and store it securely for future use. Once saved, click Done.
Once this is done, click on the settings icon in the top menu and select Billing. You’ll need to add a credit card and input the minimum funds of $5 USD, as the API cannot function on the free tier. Once this is completed, the OpenAI stage is complete.
Next, go to Zapier and either create a new Zap or open an existing one. Search for OpenAI as the action, click on it, and then, in the sidebar, click Connect an account.
Then, enter the API key information and click Yes.
Fill in the configuration details, run the test, and you have now successfully connected the OpenAI API with Zapier.
From my experience setting up hundreds of these integrations for various Copilot API products (not just from Zapier), the most common issue is related to billing. Make sure funds have been added to your account, as it can sometimes take up to three days for your account to be upgraded from the free tier. If this takes longer, I recommend contacting OpenAI support. If you run into any issues, feel free to reach out, and I’ll be happy to help. Also, if you're interested in setting up the Azure API, just let me know—it’s a bit more complex!
