Hey yall! My name is Ryan—I'm one of the product managers at Zapier and last time you all heard from me I was sharing news about our Gmail add-on. Well, this time I’m back with a new feature for one of the most popular chat tools, Slack! Specifically, we’ve built an integration into Slack’s Workflow Builder so you can now choose the Zapier app as one of the steps in your workflows!

What’s new?

We are now able to choose from over 20 different apps with more than 75+ actions (Slack calls them "Steps"). Without leaving Slack, we can build workflows that:

  • Create new projects or tasks in project management tools like Asana
  • Create or manage tasks in task management tools like Todoist
  • Add or update leads in a CRM like Pipedrive
  • Automatically send emails via Gmail or Outlook

How it works?

  1. If you’ve installed the Zapier app (within Slack) before, you’ll need to reinstall the app, by clicking here, otherwise you can search for the Zapier app in Slack’s App Directory
  2. Next, from any channel, select the Shortcuts button near the message input and choose "Create a workflow"
  3. Create a new workflow from scratch
  4. Give your workflow a name and then choose a way to start the workflow
  5. Select "Add Step"
  6. Choose the Zapier app “More Steps by Zapier”

  7. Choose your app category and app of choice
  8. Select the action and configure it

  9. Publish your workflow
  10. Use the Shortcuts menu to initiate the workflow!

Tip: To preview a workflow, add it to a test channel. Once you’re sure it’s working properly, you can edit your workflow to move it to the right channel.

You can learn more about this nature in our blog post and make sure to leave a comment down below with any feedback you have! If there are specific apps or actions that you would like us to add, please share that as well!

Exciting stuff! Thanks @Ryan Powell

Awesome @Ryan Powell , would you be able to also include ClickUp.com as Task management app? We run everything through it and the other workflow apps are pretty useless to us.

Let me know!

Hi @karlfrankeser - I’m an avid ClickUp user for the last few years now. The best way to request features from ClickUp is through their community: https://clickup.canny.io/feature-requests?search=zapier -  They mention that upvoting helps surface your needs. Thanks for understanding!

Hey Ryan,

This is a great step forward to even more seamless automation! :raised_hands_tone1:

I did give it a try and I noticed that there was an error encountered with sheets that have a lot of columns (fields). Is there a planned fix for this?

Thanks!

Can we please get Github integration?

Still hoping for Github integration, but I have an even bolder request for Slack Workflow Builder + Zapier!

Would it be possible to trigger a (Sub-)Zap from Slack Workflow, similar to Push to Zapier? So essentially Push to Zapier as a Slack Workflow task, with variables from the Slack workflow being pushed to the called zap. That would make my life so much easier…

Hi @jphorn!

I've gone ahead and added your vote for GitHub and Sub-Zaps into an existing feature request we have. We'll let you know via email when that's been implemented.

For the record, I think adding Sub-Zaps in there would be awesome :)

I would love to see support for Coda in this feature! It would open up a lot of workflows for us at Figma

Love this feature! Requesting for Notion integration, please. :)

Hi @jphorn, I have worked around any missing actions by sending the data to a spreadsheet and then using a New Spreadsheet Row in Google Sheets trigger. Then, any supported app integration can be used for an action step.

While I agree having support for more actions would be better, hopefully, that can help around the current limitations.

Cheers!

This would be HUGE!
Our business has started to rely on a lot of seamless tools/workflows I built for the employees on automate.io, where I was just able to push information from a slack workflow to an automate.io bot(Zap equivalent). Unfortunately automate.io is shutting down so we’re having to migrate here. Would love to see the direct push feature really soon!
Its a lot more useful than the pre-setup apps that Zapier provides in slack workflows, because you can just use your pushed data however and send it to any other app. It doesn’t have to be so catered within slack workflows.
The current push message feature doesn’t work out all that great because pushing a message is not an automatable step, so its adding manual work, which defeats the purpose of what most of us are on here for obviously.

Fingers crossed it comes out soon.

Hey! This is a clever workaround! I might have to do this as a last resort. The issue I run into with this is for every workflow/every step where I may want to push a set of data, I now have to have a new google sheet set up. This will end up being very clunky if we were to run our automated tools through 20+ google sheets. At a business/enterprise level this idea unfortunately breaks down. Not to mention even google docs/drive seems to become problematic when you have bots editing or generating files multiple times a day.
But this might be my best bet until some kind of direct push is released.
Thanks!
