Zap runs held as Google Sheets "returned too many items at once"

Hello,

I’ve got many Zaps held recently.

One of them is telling me “This Google Sheets step is pending because it returned too many items at once.” Do you have an idea what is means?

Is the google sheet step your trigger?

If so, Zapier will hold task when a trigger returns a large amount of items. It is designed to warn you so you don’t consume all of your tasks. You can easily play held tasks in your Zap history.

Just wanted to follow up here to add that sometimes editing a Google Sheet while the Zap is still switched on can cause the Zap to trigger too many times. For example if the rows were sorted or new rows were added at the top/middle of a Google Sheet can cause existing rows to be seen by the Zap as new rows and it will trigger for them.

We have a flood protection system in place to prevent accidental triggers like this. So if a Zap attempts to fire for 100+ items at once we’ll automatically hold those Zap runs. This is allows you to review the held Zap runs to check that they were intentional and replay them.

More information about this can be found here: Flood protection and held items
